Bulgaria’s government has proposed making Wednesday, December 31, 2025, and Friday, January 2, 2026, public holidays to support preparations for adopting the euro at the start of the new year. The draft decision, introduced by Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova, awaits formal approval before taking effect.

The non-working days are intended to give banks and other sectors time to adjust financial and technical systems to the new currency and minimize operational risk. Officially, Bulgaria is switching from its old currency, the Bulgarian lev, to the euro on January 1, 2026.

With New Year’s Day already a national public holiday, the move would create a five-day stretch off work from Wednesday, December 31, 2025, through Sunday, January 4, 2026.
