The final Saturday before Christmas has become a very popular shopping day in the US, earning the nickname “Super Saturday.”
A Big Day at the Cash Register
Often seen as the last chance to get everything on your Christmas shopping list, US consumers crowd into stores the final Saturday before the holiday, creating one of the biggest sales days of the year. Some estimates put Super Saturday US revenues at around 15 billion dollars annually.
To capitalize on the rush, many stores feature promotions aimed at impulse buyers, keep longer store hours, and add more workers to handle extra customers.
Super Saturday profits can mean a lot to individual businesses. In some cases, the day’s sales represent a large part of a shop’s yearly income.
A Habit of Putting Shopping Off
One reason for the success of Super Saturday is that many people in the US tend to put off Christmas shopping till the last minute. A 2009 survey indicated that about 40% of consumers hadn’t even started their Christmas shopping by Super Saturday that year.
And these consumers seem to prefer in-person shopping. While online retailing is still popular, many people worry that their packages won’t arrive in time if they haven’t bought by Super Saturday, so in-store sales have remained strong on the date.
