What Does It Look Like?

Comet Lovejoy appears green in many photos. However, you can only capture the greenish glow with a camera using a long exposure. To the naked eye, the comet will look grey.

Return in 8000 Years

Comet Lovejoy is a long-period comet. After its brief visit to Earth, it will head for the outer solar system. With its orbital period of 8000 years, the next chance to see it from Earth will be in year 10,015.

Discovered in 2014

This Lovejoy (C/2014 Q2) was discovered on August 17, 2014. It is the fifth comet to be discovered by Terry Lovejoy, an amateur Australian astronomer. The last “Comet Lovejoy” seen from Earth was C/2013 R in 2013.
