The unofficial holiday is the brainchild of W.T. Rabe, who created it at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan in the late 1970s. Rabe invented Sauntering Day as a response to the rising popularity of jogging, and to inspire people to slow down the pace of their lives and unwind.
How to Celebrate?
- Take your lunchtime or leave a little early from work to take a stroll in a park close to you.
- Saunter down to your local coffee shop with a book in hand and spend some time people watching while drinking coffee.
- Don't want to saunter? No worries. This holiday is all about getting away from the daily grind and finding a way to relax. Whether you chill at home with a glass of wine and a movie marathon on the TV or take a stroll around your neighborhood, remember to enjoy yourself!
Did You Know…
…that for average walkers, walking 1 mile or 1.6 kilometers can burn up to 100 calories? So, why not saunter your way to health?
